Flags at half-staff in honor of Chang (Oct. 19)

Gov. Neil Abercrombie has ordered all national and state flags at all state offices and agencies as well as the Hawaii National Guard are to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, Oct. 19, 2012 in honor of former state Senator Anthony Kai Ung Chang.

Chang was elected to the Legislature in 1982 and served the Nuuanu, Liliha, Pauoa, Alewa Heights, Chinatown, Papakolea and Pacific Heights communities for 12 years. He served on numerous committees and was known as a consensus builder.

Chang then worked as an attorney with the city Office of Corporation Counsel and the Liquor Commission from 1994 through 2000.

He later provided historic tours of Chinatown sharing his knowledge and favorite eateries with many.

“Tony Chang will be remembered as a man of diplomacy who taught those who worked with him to listen to all sides,” Abercrombie said. “We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Chang ohana.”
