Brushfire burns in Kailua-Kona, Hualalai Road shut-down Friday (Oct 5)

The brush fire at this time is on the makai side of Hualalai Elderly at Hualalai and above Kamaaina Hale off Kuakini Hwy. Hualalai Road is blocked near Regency At Hualalai and at Nani Kailua Dr with HPD manning roadblocks.

Fire units responding at the scene are Kailua, Keauhou, Waimea, Waikoloa, Kalaoa Volunteers, and Chopper 2 and Chopper 1 from Hilo. It is unknown if the fire is near homes, but the public was just advised to avoid area until further notice.

Smoke from the fire is visible as far North as Kohanaiki Business Park area. There seems to be no high winds at this time, but the fire area is in a very dry section near previous burned area in February.

It is unknown of any evacuations at this time. Smokey conditions persist upwind of the fire.

Reported about 10 acres burned by 2 p.m. Smoke visible for miles. Fire first reported about 12:30 p.m.

POLICE MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii Police Department advises motorists to AVOID Hualalai Road in Kailua-Kona between the Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kuakini Highway due to a brush fire.

There are no homes endangered at this time and emergency crews are at the scene.

The Hawai’i Police Department is advising motorists that Hualalai Road in Kailua-Kona is now open.

The brush fire between Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway and Kuakini Highway has been contained. Motorists are advised to exercise caution as emergency personnel continue to work in the area.
