APAC offers seven plays for 2012-2013 season

MEDIA RELEASE

Aloha Performing Arts Company has announced its schedule for the 2012-2013.

APAC opens its 26th mainstage production season with the world community theater premiere of “The Toxic Avenger,” a rock and roll musical fresh from an Off Broadway run.

The show is headed for Broadway, but in the meantime, APAC is the first non-professional theater company anywhere to be granted the performance rights.

David Bryan of Bon Jovi wrote the music and lyrics, along with Joe DiPietro, for this irreverent adaptation of the 1985 cult classic film by Lloyd Kaufman.

The plot revolves around nerdy Melvin Ferd III, who longs to rid his hometown, Tromaville, N.J., of corruption and pollution. The mayor’s goons dump him into a vat of bubbling toxic waste, and two pages later, he emerges as The Toxic Avenger, a giant green mutant with super powers, who comes to be lovingly known as Toxie.

He uses his new powers to fight corporate greed and impress his new girlfriend, Sarah, the town’s blind librarian.

Production dates are Oct. 5-21.

Right on Toxie’s heels comes guest director David A. Payne, reuniting Dr. Frank N. Furter and his gothic minions for a four day revival of Richard O’Brien’s rock musical “The Rocky Horror Show,” which will play Oct. 25, 26, 27, and 31.

This play not included in Season Subscriptions. Tickets will be sold separately.

December will feature “A Christmas Carol,” in a spooky new adaptation of the Charles Dickens yuletide classic by Susie Burke, whose revisitation of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” was presented last season. Dec. 7-23, Ebenezer Scrooge will be dramatically reminded of the true meaning of Christmas in this excellent family holiday diversion, with an uplifting message.

Feb. 15 through March 10, APAC will present the greatest family musical of all time, “The Wizard of Oz,” in a production based on the Royal Shakespeare Company’s celebration of the 1939 MGM movie, featuring all the classic songs, as composed by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg.

The entire family will be captivated once again, as they watch the familiar, lovable characters travel down the Yellow Brick Road, seeking fulfillment in the Emerald City.

Paul Rudnick’s 1991 comedy “I Hate Hamlet” will be guest directed by Victor Pisauro April 12-28. The play is set in John Barrymore’s old apartment in New York City, now rented by television actor Andrew Rally, who is struggling with the role of Hamlet “in the park.”

Replete with seance, ghostly appearances, and plenty of swashbuckling, this modern American classic will delight Shakespeare fans and foes alike.

Sue Boyum brings another “Disney Junior” show to Kona audiences June 21-30, when she guest directs “Aladdin, Jr.”

This enchanting stage adaptation, which is streamlined and scored for younger performers, closely follows the original Disney film, and includes the number “A Whole New World.”

With music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, Tim Rice, and Jim Luigs, this kid-friendly musical is perfect summer entertainment.

APAC concludes its 2012-2013 mainstage season with “Women Behind Bars,” an adult comedy by Tom Eyen, running July 12-27.

A campy spoof of the exploitation films of the 1950′s, the show is set in the Women’s House of Detention in Greenwich Village, which is inhabited by an unusual array of female misfits and run by an indomitable matron.

Divine, the star of many John Waters movies, made her stage debut in the show Off Broadway in 1976. Something different for the adventurous summer theater patron!

All performances will be staged at the historic Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. Discounted season subscriptions are now available at www.AlohaTheatre.com, or by contacting the APAC office at (808) 322-9924.
