MEDIA RELEASE

Since opening its doors in 2005, the West Hawaii Community Health Center has made quality, comprehensive and integrated health services accessible to all, regardless of the ability to pay.

Recognizing this deep commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals, the Bank of Hawaii Foundation honored West Hawaii Community Health Center as a 2012 Bank of Hawaii Monty Richards Hawaii Island Community Award recipient.

The monetary award of $5,000 will provide funding for West Hawaii Community Health Center patients who are unable to pay for medical prescriptions.

The Bank of Hawaii Monty Richards Community Award was established in 2008 and supports Hawaii Island nonprofit organizations that demonstrate innovative approaches to help improve the quality of life.

The award was established in honor of Herbert “Monty” Montague Richards, Jr., a dedicated Hawaii Island community leader and former longtime board director for Bank of Hawaii.

“Our West Hawaii Community Health Center team has such a tremendous spirit for the patients we serve. This award will help us provide much needed assistance for patients who are unable to pay for their medicine,” said WHCHC Executive Director Richard Taaffe.

“When Donna Tanoue, President of the Bank of Hawaii Foundation, toured our facilities and met our physicians, nursing staff and administrators she was able to observe our depth of service and how we have grown since we opened our doors seven years ago,” Taaffe said.

The entire $25,000 Bank of Hawaii Monty Richards Hawaii Island Community Award will be shared among The Arc of Hilo, North Kohala Community Resource Center, O Ka‘u Kakou and West Hawaii Community Health Center.

The mission of the West Hawaii Community Health Center is to make quality, comprehensive and integrated health services accessible to all regardless of income.

West Hawaii Community Health Care Center serves Hawaii Island residents with offices in Kailua-Kona and Kealakekua and will add Waikoloa Village later this year. An Emergency Adult Dental Van is also stationed at Hope Services in Kailua-Kona.
