Crash in Hamakua leaves two dead and five seriously injured Monday (Sept 10)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 4:23 p.m. alarm Monday (Sept 10) for a two car crash near the 39 mile marker of the Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 19) East of Honokaa.

Rescuers found both cars down a 15 foot embankment laying on their sides. Four people escaped without injuries, five were in serious condition and two were dead at the scene.

The patients in need of medical care were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital and Hilo Medical Center.

The highway was roadblocked and traffic along the Hamakua Coast was diverted through Kalopa Makai Road an through Honokaa town.

    Was driving back from waimea to honokaa, and saw even police/fire trucks from waimea heading out to this.
    had me stumped, till I read this.

    Was on my way home from Hilo and reached accident scene about 5:30pm and was one of them who were re-routed on the kalopa makai rd. As I reached to the top of the highway again the accident scene was very close but cars were on the opposite side of the road so I was not able to tell what happened until I saw the local news reprt on tv. Very sad. God bless them all.
