Andrew Kelsey, director of college counseling at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, has been invited to serve as a member of the Government Relations Committee of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC).

Kelsey will serve a three-year term beginning in October 2012.

NACAC’s Government Relations committee works at both the state and national level to promote advancements in educational policy with particular emphasis on college-related issues.

As a committee member, Kelsey will work with other national leaders who advocate on behalf of all those involved in the college admissions process.

Kelsey’s service at the national level began when he was elected by his colleagues to serve as the president of the Hawaii Association of College Admission Counseling (HACAC) in 2009.

As the association’s second neighbor island president in the organization’s 25-year history, Kelsey led HACAC’s efforts to champion local initiatives in college counseling and represented the state of Hawaii at NACAC national conferences and on NACAC’s State and Regional Executive Board.

This year, Kelsey also was elected to serve as the next chairman of the Hawaii ACT Advisory Board, which focuses on promoting college and career readiness programs for all Hawaii high school students. Kelsey has served on the ACT Executive Board for the last three years prior to his election.

The ACT Advisory Board funds and provides leadership and support for numerous programs and events statewide.

The board’s work includes increasing standardized testing awareness, providing data analysis, working with state government and the Board of Education, and offering support for individual high school programs.

The ACT Advisory Board has earned a reputation for being a strong advocate for Hawaii student issues.
