Flood advisory issued for the Big Island Monday (Aug 20)

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island until 9:15 a.m. Monday (Aug 20) for the areas of North Kohala, Hamakua, Hilo and Puna.

At 6:15 a.m. radar showed areas of moderate to heavy rain moving over the Windward side of the Big Island and stream gages indicate significant rises in water levels since then. Additional showers are approaching from the East.

People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and braking action.

This advisory could be extended if the heavy rain persists.
