Honokaa Gym to reopen Thursday (Aug 9)

MEDIA RELEASE

The County of Hawai‘i Department of Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce it will reopen Honoka‘a Gymnasium on Thursday, Aug. 9, following completion of a two-month repair project to replace the facility’s aging roof.

Efficient work by Ivan Mochida Contracting Inc. has allowed the department to reopen the gym days earlier than expected.

The contractor replaced the roof over the main courts, installed new thermal insulation, and replaced numerous steel framing members to create a safe, leak-free recreational venue that will continue to serve the public well for many years.

The gym’s exterior will be repainted during the next several weeks, although that work is not anticipated to disrupt use of the popular facility.

The Department of Parks and Recreation thanks the Honoka‘a community and all gymnasium users for their understanding and patience while the facility was closed for repair. A special mahalo is extended to the Hawai‘i Department of Education for graciously allowing the department to hold its Summer Fun Program at the Honoka‘a High and Intermediate School cafeteria.

To inquire about gym hours and availability for reservations, please may call Recreation Director Anna Muranaka at 775-7505.

I am interested in offering Hung Gar Shaolin Kung Fu at your facility. I taught at the Seattle Kung Fu Club in Seattle, Washington where I trained for seventeen years, and taught classes on Vashon Island for ten years. I have also taught here on the Big Island while I have been here but not yet really found a suitable location.
