Parker Ranch, county to develop Waimea district park

MEDIA RELEASE

Dutch Kuyper, CEO of Parker Ranch, Inc., has announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the County of Hawaii that will result in the development of a district park for Waimea.

According to the terms of the MOU, Parker Ranch has agreed to provide about 24 acres to the county Department of Parks and Recreation, which will work with the community to design a district park that will include two football or soccer fields and a youth baseball field. Plans also envision a community gymnasium, parking and gathering areas.

Kuyper expressed his gratitude for the efforts of Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi and his staff.

“Mayor Kenoi and his team have been working closely with us to develop the plans for this park and we appreciate those efforts. We are also pleased that our community will have more space to convene sports and other outdoor events for the residents of Waimea and surrounding areas.”

Kenoi said he is grateful for Parker Ranch’s cooperation in
providing the land needed for a district park.

“These types of facilities, where our families can get together and where our kids can engage in positive activities, are crucial for our island,” Kenoi said. “Mahalo to Dutch Kuyper and Parker Ranch for contributing to a healthier and safer community.”

Parker Ranch may, at its discretion, dedicate an additional 26 acres for future expansion from a district park to a regional park, which has more than 50 acres of recreational space.

The county will be responsible for developing the park and the infrastructure necessary to support the park.
