Ryan signs with Mount Olive College

MEDIA RELEASE

When Ryan Thomas committed to Mount Olive College to play volleyball, he knew he made the right decision that would impact not only his next four years but his next 40 years.

With the help of NCSA Athletic Recruiting, Thomas was given the opportunity to be proactive in his recruiting process and become educated on the steps he needed to take to achieve his ultimate goal of competing in college volleyball.

Thomas had many accomplishments while attending Kamehameha Schools both academically and athletically, attaining a cumulative GPA of 3.08, and being a three year Varsity starter and Captain of his team.

Thomas’ hard work and dedication to the recruiting process paid off as he strived to be a leader in both sports and in his community, and as a result, Thomas has been rewarded with the opportunity to play the sport he loves at the next level.

Thousands of student-athletes dream of playing collegiate sports, but only a small percentage are actually recruited to play.

NCSA Athletic Recruiting helped Thomas achieve that dream and become one of the very few to continue playing and becoming a leader through sports.

Thomas’ Personal Statement

Aloha, I am a 5’11” libero senior from Hilo, Hawaii, who attends Kamehameha Schools Hawaii Keaau Campus. I have six years of club volleyball experience with Pilipaa Volleyball Club under a coach who is a former UCLA volleyball player.

I have led the 2011 division 1 boys volleyball Hawaii state tournament with 38 digs. I am a versatile player that has played all positions prior to high school, but I have decided to specialize in the libero and defensive specialist positions for that is my strength and where my team has needed me.

My father has been a long time volleyball coach here in Hawaii, and has been an assistant coach at my high school for the past eight years. My father, who like most coaches, gets down on me more to rally my teammates.

Being on the varsity team since my freshman year, and earning my libero spot, I take responsibility for the rare amount of losses my team has, as I know our wins were won by the contribution from each member of our team.

My head coach for my high school team, who was a former head coach for the Oregon State University women’s volleyball team, stresses that our team will only be as strong as our weakest player.

Knowing how successful his teams have been in the past, I quickly bought in.

On top of my own personal workouts I offer to my teammates, I also work with the weaker players on my team to strengthen their fundamentals, while still balancing my academics. I am a firm believer in hard work paying off. Being one of the top five teams consistently in the state of Hawaii for the past nine years our school has been in existance, this year we will be contending for a state title.

If I continue to work hard, help my teammates, and push everyone, then this year will be a really successful season.

I realize I have started this recruiting process late, but it has always been a dream of mine to pursue playing competitive collegiate volleyball and I am open to explore opportunities at all divisions.

I am looking for a college that will prepare me for Law School in which I aspire to be a criminal defense attorney. Although I live in Hawaii, I truly have an open mind to exploring schools anywhere, as long as I will receive a good education.

It is very important to me that I attend a school where I can receive personal attention in the classroom, feel secured, and a school that enforces good morals which shapes people into industrious men and women.
