Credit union assisted more than 300 with taxes

MEDIA RELEASE

Hawaii First FCU helped more than 300 members of the Hawaii Island community prepare their taxes for free this 2012 tax season through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.

With the recent opening of its second resource center, Hawaii First was able to offer this service at two sites this year – Hilo and Waimea.

Hawaii First staff members and volunteers completed 294 returns this tax season. The total amount of federal and state refunds came to an astounding $259,990 going back into the Hawaii Island communities. Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) amounts totaled $116,166.

“Hawaii First is proud to be in our fourth year of providing free income tax preparation through the VITA program,” said Mahealani Thompson, Community Development Director. “Providing this free service to our credit union and community members allows these individuals and families to avoid tax preparation fees and take advantage of larger refunds – much needed income in many cases. It is very rewarding to know that our staff and volunteers are able to provide this free service to our community.”

Hawaii First was also one of just three participating organizations in the state to offer “Beehive,” a self-facilitated tax preparation pilot program. Beehive allowed community members with experience preparing their own taxes to e-file both state and federal returns at no cost.

The families and individuals that participated in the VITA Program were also offered free financial education and assistance along with many other valuable services and resources that Hawaii First offers.

Many members look forward to returning to Hawaii First next year for assistance with their tax preparation.
