Crash between motorcycle and truck in Kona leaves one dead

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 9:11 p.m. alarm Friday (July 13) to the intersection of Highway 11 and Kalamalani Place in Captain Cook for a crash between a motorcycle and truck.

Crews found a motorcycle on the side of the highway with the rider dead in the middle of the roadway. The truck was 50 feet off the highway in a yard with the driver pinned in the front cab. The driver was freed from the truck, secured for possible spinal injuries, treated for cardiac arrest and was transported to Kona Community Hospital.

Fire dispatch reports the motorcycle impacted the driver side door of the truck during the collision at an unknown speed.

Highway 11 was closed during the rescue operation and investigation by police. The highway re-opened at about 2 a.m. Saturday (July 14).
