Brushfire in Ka‘u burns 60 acres, leads to roadblock Friday morning (July 13)

Firefighters responded to a 10:32 a.m. alarm Friday (July 13) to the area of Lower Moaula Road and Highway 11 in Ka‘u for a brushfire.

Crews found a fire burning in a deep ravine between two Macadamia Nut orchards moving East due to 25 mph winds from the Northeast.

Firefighters concentrated their efforts on preventing the fire from crossing the highway and were successful. Crews stayed on site overnight to monitor the fire situation. The area burned was estimated to be 60 acres. The road was blocked to traffic during the operation.
