Hawaii 24/7 was honored with two awards during Friday evening’s Society of Professionals Journalists annual banquet in Honolulu.

The Excellence in Journalism contest included categories for newspapers, magazines, television, radio and online media.

Hawaii 24/7 earned first place for ‘Best Website Design.’

According to judges, “simplicity and clean design gave Hawaii 24/7 an edge in this competition.”

Honolulu-based Hawaii Reporter was a runner up. Judges declined to name a second finalist in the category.

In addition, Hawaii 24/7 was one of two finalists for ‘Best Overall News Site’ and was the only Neighbor Island website to be recognized.

The winner was Honolulu Civil Beat and the other finalist was Hawaii Magazine.

One of the judges commented: “I actually found Hawaii Reporter’s stories to be the most in-depth and engaging, but their two submissions only gave me a sense of those two stories, not of the site as a whole – so I didn’t feel I could call it a Best News Site winner. I applaud the Civil Beat’s use of multimedia and the organization’s understanding that the Web is a dynamic medium where images and video reign supreme. Hawaii 24/7’s coverage of weather was innovative.”

Publisher Baron Sekiya and editor Karin Stanton attended the dinner.

The Excellence in Journalism contest recognized work published in the calendar year 2011.

The Hawaii Chapter SPJ contest was judged by the Greater Oregon Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Last year, Hawaii 24/7 won three awards. Stanton swept the online featuring writing category, with first place and both finalist nods.
