Firefighters continue to fight stubborn brushfires in Pahala

Firefighters continue to work on extinguishing the two brushfires in Pahala Thursday (June 21).

The ‘Cane Haul Road Fire’ area along Alii Springs Road and Higashi Camp Road is 95 percent contained. The ‘Highway 11 Fire’ area has not yet been contained and is in mixed brush mauka of the highway and a Macadamia Nut orchard with pastureland makai of the highway.

Hot spots and flareups along the South edge firebreak are being watched over and extingushed by five fire units. The area mauka of Highway 11 at the 49 mile marker is being monitored and controlled by one fire unit while the area makai of the highway between mile markers 48-51 are being monitored by two units.

The fire department’s Chopper One is performing water drops on hot spots and flare ups.

The total burn area remains at 5,239 acres. An engine crew from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is also working alongside Hawaii County firefighters and volunteer units. The area did get some rain on Wednesday.
