Pahala brushfire burns 5,239 acres and still growing

Firefighters continue to battle two brushfires near Pahala Wednesday (June 20).

The ‘Cane Haul Road Fire’ is an area along Alii Springs Road and Higashi Camp Road mauka is 95 percent contained according to Hawaii County Fire Dispatch reports.

The ‘Highway 11 Fire Area’ is not contained. Firefighters are putting out hotspots along the South edge of firebreaks cut by bulldozers on the mauka side of Highway 11 near the 49 mile marker.

Makai of Highway 11 between the 48 and 51 mile markers is being fought with seven firefighting units, a helicopter doing water drops and bulldozers to cut firebreaks.

The land burning above Highway 11 is reported to be mixed brush while the area makai of the highway contains Macadamia Nut orchards and pastureland.

Police report that Highway 11 is being opened to traffic at the top of each hour to let traffic through then closed again so firefighters and equipment can utilize the roadway.
