North Kona well repaired, operating normally

MEDIA RELEASE

On May 21, 2012, the Department of Water Supply (DWS) reported the Queen Liliuokalani Trust (QLT) Well in North Kona above Mamalahoa Highway failed.

As a result, North Kona customers were immediately issued a water restriction notice calling for a mandatory 25 percent reduction in water use.

The DWS contractor was able to repair the well by installing an available spare pump/motor for the well by June 1, 2012.

At this time, all operational tests of the spare pump/motor are complete, and reports show the system is operating normally. Therefore, because the QLT Well is fully operational, North Kona water customers are no longer required to restrict water use.

In addition, the emergency water spigots that were set up in the vicinity of Kealakehe Parkway and above Kealakehe High School are no longer available.

This is the last information update regarding the QLT Well failure. The DWS appreciates every effort made by customers during this water emergency.
