Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School (LCPCS) has named David Rizor, Ph.D., director of operations. He begins his duties July 1.

Rizor, a former director of Volcano School of Arts and Sciences, has extensive experience in teaching, administration, curriculum development, fostering partnerships, and professional development.

He earned his Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Wyoming.

As Director of Operations, Rizor will develop an innovative, project-based learning curriculum for LCPCS and oversee staff.

He said he is committed to community involvement and collaboration in shaping the school’s culture to reflect Laupahoehoe’s unique culture and relationship with the aina.

The interim school board also retained Sue Deuber, M.Ed., as a hiring consultant. Deuber, a consultant with Joining Hands Consulting Services, comes to LCPCS with extensive experience in charter schools.

She helped to found and oversee Voyager Public Charter School in Honolulu, serving as Principal, CEO, and Project and Development Manager. Under her management, Voyager doubled in size over nine years.

She earned her M.Ed. in special education from the University of Cincinnati.

Deuber has been retained by LCPCS to screen applicants for teaching and staff positions. More than 250 applications have been received.

On July 1, Laupahoehoe’s school becomes an official public charter school, open to all children, grades K to 12, tuition free. Its mission is to emphasize hands-on learning and academic success where every student is known and valued, using community partnerships and resources to instill traditional cultural values.

School starts Aug, 1, 2012.
