Wind advisory continues for Big Island summits

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has downgraded the wind warning to a wind advisory for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 8,000 feet through 6 a.m. Tuesday (June 5).

An upper level low pressure system is approaching the islands from the East and will maintain strong winds at higher elevations. Breezy and gusty winds are forecast to continue through the week for the islands.

Winds for the summits are forecast to be 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Winds this strong can make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution when driving in these strong winds.

A small craft advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday for the Alenuihaha Channel, Big Island windward, leeward and Southeast waters.
