Fire/rescue crews answered a 2:49 p.m. alarm Sunday (June 2) to South Point for a missing fisherman off-shore the South Point lighthouse in Ka‘u.

The fisherman was reported to have been using a ‘throw net’ and was swept into the ocean by a wave in rough ocean conditions. The fisherman’s friends on shore tried to get a floatation device to the man without success. Witnesses on shore lost site of the man about 200 yards off-shore as he was drifting to the West.

The fire department’s Chopper One and Chopper Two conducted aerial searches of the area while a rescue boat with divers also joined in to search on the surface and underwater but did not find the fisherman.

The search by county crews was suspended due to darkness and will be resumed in the morning. The U.S. Coast Guard continued the search throughout the night with a helicopter eight miles off-shore.
