MEDIA RELEASE

Mayor Billy Kenoi and the Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation are pleased to announce that Honoka’a Gymnasium is receiving a new roof and other improvements as part of a $571,000 facility upgrade.

Ivan Mochida Contracting Inc. will replace the gym’s main roof, install new insulation, and replace numerous steel framing members to restore the facility to a safe, leak-free recreational venue that will serve the public well for many years.

Work is scheduled to begin Monday, June 4 and is expected to be finished by Aug. 10. In an effort to minimize the project’s impacts on the public, the contractor will attempt to expedite construction.

Safety concerns stemming from the overhead construction work necessitate closing the gymnasium for the project’s duration, although other areas of the Honoka‘a Complex will remain open.

The Department of Parks and Recreation wishes to thank the Honoka‘a community and all gymnasium users for their understanding and patience while this much-needed construction project is undertaken.

A special mahalo also is extended to the state Department of Education for graciously accommodating youth enrolled in the County’s Summer Fun Program, which will start Thursday, June 7 and be held at the Honoka‘a High and Intermediate School cafeteria.
