The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a high surf advisory for East facing shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. Monday (May 28).

Strong trade winds are bringing rough surf to East facing shores. Surf is forecast to be five to eight feet. Beachgoers and those in the ocean should use caution due to the rough surf and strong rip currents. Localized beach erosion can also occur due to wave action.

A high pressure system far Northeast of the Hawaiian Islands is causing the strong East Northeast trade winds. The robust trade winds are expected to remain through the Memorial Day weekend.

A gale warning is in effect for the Alenuihaha Channel, Big Island Leeward and Southeast waters until 6 p.m. Saturday (May 26). A small craft advisory is also in effect for Big Island Windward waters through the weekend until 6 p.m. Monday.
