Sierra Club Moku Loa Group is hosting two public meetings this week on fish farming in Hawaii.

Dave Raney, leader of the Sierra Club Marine Action Team, will talk about fish farming, its implications for the ocean ecosystems offshore, policies and alternatives being proposed to address those concerns.

He will discuss how marine fish farming in Hawaii relates to national and state policies within the global context of aquaculture as a means to meet food needs for growing populations, and what opportunities, and barriers, exist for community-based alternatives such as fishpond restoration and aquaponics.

The Coast Zone Management listening sessions will follow Dave Raney’s talk, both in Kona and Hilo. The Office of State Planning is seeking public input on a wide range of topics.
