Surfer apparently drowns at Pohoiki Thursday morning (May 10)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:05 a.m. alarm Thursday (May 10) for a possible drowning at ‘Birdshacks’ surf spot in Pohoiki.

Lifeguards reported that the man was surfing, fell off his board and did not surface. Lifeguards brought the man to shore and started CPR. Rescue crews arrived and continued CPR then transported the victim to Hilo Medical Center where the man was pronounced dead.

The surfer has been identified by Hawaii County Police as 42 year-old Nathan Keliikuli of Keaau.

Police reported that Keliikuli was surfing, fell off his surfboard and hit his jaw against it. Keliikuli was unconscious as he was brought to shore where CPR was initiated. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition and later pronounced dead at 11:13 a.m.

Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
