MEDIA RELEASE
U. S. Senate candidate and former U. S. Congressman Ed Case (D-HI ’02-’07) spoke to Hawaii Island Democrats at its county convention Saturday at Honokaa High School.
Hawaii Island Democrats had invited Case and fellow Democratic candidate Mazie Hirono to appear jointly before them to present their candidacies side by side, debate the issues and answer questions.
Case accepted and, while Hirono asked to speak, she declined any debate or joint appearance, as she declined all other Hawaii Island debate/joint appearance invitations.
Case apologized to convention attendees for the lack of a debate before them.
“Debates are good for democracy and good for our party,” he said. “They show voters we’re not afraid of open discussion and decision. I hope Mazie changes her mind.”
In his speech, Case highlighted the critical importance of this Senate election on a national scale to preserving and advancing Democratic causes like labor, minority and women’s rights, the social safety net and environmental protection.
“I don’t have to tell you how high the stakes are,” he said. “Our party’s Aug. 11 primary will determine whether Linda Lingle will be Hawaii’s Senator for the next generation and may well determine the U. S. Senate majority. So it’s no stretch to say that in towns like Honokaa, far from even Honolulu and light years from D.C., the future of our state and country will be decided.”
