Still time to chip in for Visitor Industry Charity Walk (May 12)

MEDIA RELEASE

The annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk is coming up May 12, but there is still time to get involved or make a donation.

The Visitor Industry Charity Walk aims to distribute $175,000 to eligible Big Island nonprofit organizations. The scenic 3-½ mile walk and 4 mile run starts and finishes at Queen’s Marketplace on Waikoloa Drive with entertainment by Hot Lava 808 and Manao Company.

All participants are treated to a mini-food show with dishes and refreshments from 11 island chefs.

The Charity Walk, 6:30-10:30 a.m., is the public’s opportunity to support the many valuable nonprofit organizations that provide needed services to Big Island families and visitors.

One such charity is Disabled Adventures Hawaii, a new nonprofit offering free services to those with limited mobility. Its website and blog gives information about adaptive sports, accessible beaches, assistive equipment and barrier-free restaurants.

Most extended families have one or more relatives whose lives are made easier and safer with information provided by Disabled Adventures.

Be a Pledge Walker for a $35 donation by emailing jeanmhartley@yahoo.com or calling 896-8967.

When government funding decreases, local nonprofits step in the gap to meet community needs.

For more information, contact event coordinator Bambi Lau at 886-2884 or Freddy Lau at 881-3065.
