Firefighters recover body found floating in Onomea Bay Saturday (May 5)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:39 p.m. alarm Saturday (May 5) when a passerby spotted the body of a man floating in Onomea Bay North of Hilo.

The fire department’s helicopter airlifted the body, which was about 200 yards off shore, to the Onomea Bay lookout. Police said it was a 43 year-old Papaikou man who was reportedly picking Opihi in Onomea.

The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The identity of the man is being withheld pending notification of their family.

Police are investigating the incident and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
