By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 9:17 a.m. alarm Sunday (April 15) to a structure fire in Puna.

Crews found flames and smoke coming from the rear of a home on Kekauonohi Place in Pahoa. The fire was contained to a garage structure housing an outside kitchen with a propane stove.

The owner was at church and the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Neighbors attempted to put the blaze out but were unsuccessful due to safety concerns from propane tanks in the flames.

Firefighters were able to have the fire under control less than 10 minutes of arrival with the fire declared out about 45 minutes after that.

Damage is estimated to be $1,000 and no injuries reported in the fire. The owner who arrived on scene did not know what caused the blaze. The cause of the fire is undetermined according to fire dispatch.
