Hawaii Prep announces programs for the summer of 2012

Tiny Tots Tennis: June 11-August 6
Junior Tennis: May 29-August 14

HPA tennis coaches Steve Campbell and Colleen Patton have planned a series of classes and camps for children of all ability levels. The two-day Tiny Tots classes, for children ages 4-7, will provide a fun introduction to the sport with games and prizes. The classes run from noon to 1 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays. Fee: $30 each week.

Junior Tennis Camps, for children age 6 and older, emphasize the development of proper technique of all strokes. Each player will be coached in various aspects of match play, including strategy, which will be customized to the player’s level. There will be special age sessions for intermediate and high school players. Camps run from noon to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Fee: $130 per week.

Equestrian Camp: June 12-14 and June 19-21
The daily three-hour equestrian camp, open to all students eight years and older, offers a diverse training regimen designed to create a working knowledge of the aids and mechanics involved when riding English, as well as proper grooming and tacking procedures. Instruction will encourage students to enhance and challenge their existing equestrian knowledge, or, for beginners, learn stable management and basic riding skills. Fee: $75 per day.

The weekly two-hour Friday Riding Program, also is open to students eight years and older. During the summer, the riding program runs from 3 to 5 p.m. This ongoing program gives students an opportunity to ride on the field with one instructor or head up into the hills with another instructor. Fee: $40 per session.

Trail rides can be arranged on an individual basis. Fee: $35/hour (two-hour minimum.

Youth Basketball Camps: June 4-7
HPA basketball coaches Dave Huntington and Fred Wawner will lead the camps for rising fourth through tenth grade boys and girls. Camps will focus on skill development, footwork fundamentals, and team and in-game instruction in a fun atmosphere. All campers will take home a camp basketball.

  • 8:30 to 10 a.m.: Camp for rising fourth through seventh graders. Fee: $65.
  • 1 to 4 p.m.: Camp for rising eighth through tenth graders. Fee: $80.

Summer Session: June 26-July 20
Our diverse Summer Session offers enrichment and unique study opportunities for boarding and day students entering grades 6-12. This year, we are very excited to introduce Hoku a ‘Aina, a new summer program for students entering grades 6, 7, and 8. From the stars to the earth, through an experience of culture, water, energy, and food, this sustainability program offers a morning interdisciplinary seminar that integrates core skills through ecoliteracy. Students will experience the bio-cultural diversity of the Waimea area during field trips.

Two-hour enrichment courses for students in grades 9 through 12 include SAT Prep, Drivers Education, Marine Science Seminar (earn 0.5 elective credit), Algebra and Geometry, Aquaculture Systems, The Writer’s Imagination, Bamboo Crafts and Construction, Big Island Graphics Studio, Mixed Media Ceramics, Photojournalism, English as a Second Language, and more. Financial aid is available.

Tuition: $4,600 (boarding). Fee for individual day courses: $550/class. Online registration available at www.hpa.edu.

Ka Makani Kids Camp: July 9-August 3
The weekday camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the HPA Upper Campus for rising kindergarten through fifth grade students. Camps are divided into groups—Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5. Students will explore “go green” concepts in an integrated, safe, and creative hands-on environment. Group and team-building activities focus on stories and geography of Waimea, paniolo culture, and renewable energy experiments. Fee includes camp T-shirt, daily lunch, snacks, and supplies. Swimming Lessons: June 25-July 20

  • Session 1—June 25-July 6
  • Session 2—July 9-July 20

Sessions are two weeks long, with lessons held Monday through Friday. Students will receive a half-hour of instruction. This is a great opportunity to learn to swim or to advance one’s swimming technique and endurance, as all levels of classes are provided—From Mommy/Daddy and Me to Advanced.
