Hawaii 24/7 Staff

A motorcyclist died Wednesday morning following a collision with a car on Mamalahoa Highway near Puuanahulu, according to fire officials.

The 30-year-old man was traveling north on a Kawasaki motorcycle when he apparently hit the rear of the car and lost control just south of Waikoloa Road, fire officials reported. The collision occurred in a construction zone.

Following the 11:25 a.m. alarm, crews found the motorcycle on its side with extensive damage, and the car had damage to the driver’s side tail light assembly. There were two occupants in the car with no injuries.

Police closed Highway 190 between Waikoloa Road and Kaiminani Drive to conduct an investigation. Fire crews reported the cause of the crash as undetermined.

Traffic was detoured onto Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kawaihae Road until the road was reopened at approximately 3 p.m.
