The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter weather advisory for Big Island summits above 8,000 feet until 6 p.m. this evening (March 26).

Snow showers and freezing rain is expected this afternoon and is forecast to bring up to an inch of snow above 12,000 feet. Winds are forecast to be from the North at 10-15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

The snow and ice on roadways and trails will make driving and hiking hazardous. Drivers can expect slippery roads with limited visibility.

Currently the road to the summit of Mauna Kea is open but this may change due to weather conditions.
