Hamakua generator knocked out power

Hawaii Electric Light Company has announced that at 9:49 p.m. Tuesday and again at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday approximately 9,090 customers experienced short power interruptions when Hamakua Energy Partners’ (HEP) generators unexpectedly tripped off-line.

Customers in various locations throughout the Island were turned off automatically to protect the rest of the system.

Other HELCO generating units in reserve were immediately started and service to all affected customers was restored within 10 minutes or less.

HELCO apologizes for the disruptions this may have caused and sincerely thanks its customers for their cooperation and understanding.
