Junior Aidan Wharton earned first place in Parker School’s 5th annual Poetry Out Loud competition on March 1.
Twenty-three Parker School students in grades 9-12 participated in the contest, which is sponsored by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
The competition is held annually at high schools across the United States, and “encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation†and “helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.â€
Parker Junior Paul Gregg came in second place, and sophomore Nondi Lampkin and seniors Thomas Baldwin, Jesse Tarnas and Victoria Andrade-McKeehan all tied for third place.
Wharton will fly to Oahu to compete at the state competition March 18.
