Flood advisory for Big Island Saturday (March 3)

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for Hawaii County until 7:30 a.m. Saturday (March 3).

At 4:15 a.m. rain gages at Piihonua showed heavy rain falling at over 1/2 an inch per hour with radar indicating areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms in the area. The heavy rain is moving Northwest at 15 mph.

Other locations in the advisory area, but are not limited to, are Papaikou, Punaluu, Kawa Flats, Phala, Pepeekeo, Naalehu, Honomu, Hilo and Laupahoehoe.

Drivers should be cautious due to reduced visibility, ponding of water and poor braking action. Drivers and pedestrians should not cross fast flowing or rising waters.
