Boys Basketball: Third place finish for HPA

The Big Island’s top finished at this year’s boys basketball state tournament is HPA, which earned third place.

No.2 seed HPA easily bested Seabury Hall early Saturday to take the third place in Division II.

Over in Division I, No. 3 Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii lost to No. 4 Baldwin and had to settle for fourth place. Kamehameha put in a brave effort Friday night after half the squad and coach came down with a stomach virus and team leader Lanaki Apele went out in the first half with an elbow injury.

Meanwhile, the state titles belong to Punahou and Kalaheo – both No. 1 seeds.

Punahou outlasate No. 2 Kahuku, 59-52, to earn the Division I crown. In Division II, No. 1 seed Kalaheo topped McKinley, 57-42.

Two Big Isle student-athletes were named to the all-tournament teams, as selected by Hawaii High School Athletic Association staff and media.
