Big Island Press Club scholarships for budding journalism students

MEDIA RELEASE

The Big Island Press Club is pleased to announce the availability of college scholarships to students with Big Island ties who are seeking careers in journalism. This is one of the core tenets of the press club’s mission, which is comprised of dozens of Big Island media professionals and supporters of open government. The scholarships are funded by our annual dues, interest from tax-deductible donations to the nonprofit Big Island Press Club Scholarship Foundations, and endowments.

This year we are offering the $1,500 Robert C. Miller Memorial Scholarship, the $1,000 Bill Arballo Scholarship, and $500 each in the name of the late Jack Markey and the late Yukino Fukabori. The BIPC Scholarship Committee may release supplemental funds from the estate of the late Marcia Reynolds at its discretion.

Go to the BIPC website and click on the links that say “Scholarship info” and “Apply for Scholarships” which detail the additional information applicants must submit by the deadline of June 9. Applications without all the required information will be deemed incomplete.

After an initial review of the applicants the Scholarship Committee will be conducting personal interviews in Hilo in the summer. If applicants cannot be physically present an interview may be conducted over the phone.

Recipients of the scholarships have gone on to be productive members of the media. We invite everyone eligible to complete an application and we look forward to seeing or hearing from them in person.
