Girls Basketball: Konawaena repeats as state champ

The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds took it to the wire Saturday evening in the girls Division II state basketball championship game on Oahu.

Eventually, Konawaena outlasted, outgunned and outperformed Iolani, 56-45.

The two teams traded baskets in the first quarter, but Iolani went on a 9-2 tear to open up an early lead.

Iolani capitalized on Konawaena turn overs, converting them into points where the Wildcats couldn’t.

Konawaena closed the gap to 26-21 at half-time.

In a second half comeback, Konawaena on it own scoring 10-2 scoring run and took the lead back, 34-32, with about 2 minutes left in the third quarter.

Iolani could score just 6 points in the quarter, but gave up 13 free throws.

Lia Galdeira was Impact Player for Konawaena. She scored 21 points in the game.

Bobbie Awa, in her 12th year coaching, lead Konawaena to its fifth state title.

Konawaena went into the game with a 14-0 record; Iolani had a 13-1 record.

Both schools went into the game with four previously state championships, tying them for third overall in the record books.

Konawaena previously held the crown 2011, 2009, 2007 and 2004. Iolani’s last state title came in 1996 and it was runner up in 2008.
