The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Surf Advisory for West facing shores of the Big Island from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday (Jan 10).

Surf is forecast to be five to eight feet causing large breaking waves and rip currents. Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the ocean and away from the water's edge where large waves are impacting the shoreline.

No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data. However – earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter.
