By Paul Dagdag | Special to Hawaii 24/7
I have read, and have been told, that the likeness of a woman may appear anywhere within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This was a random shot taken in a hurry to move out of the way of a bus pulling into the steam vents area. Never looked at the photos until I got home the next day. Open to your imagination. I see what I see.
Pele looks at peace.
About 3 years ago I caught a magnificant picture of a woman in the steam rising from an ocean entry of lava. The picture was striking in that the woman had long flowing hair, the nose of a supermodel, beautiful eyes and a heavy flower lei. After sharing it with a few close friends, mysteriously, I can no longer find the picture on the hard drive of any of the computers I have owned since I took the picture – and I have looked repeatedly. Even weirder, none of the friends I shared it with can find the photo either.
Pele reveals herself infrequently and then only on her terms.
I see her, hope that “smile” is a friendly one.
OH BOY I hope she don’t get upset about her pic being seen by everyone!
The human mind is programmed to recognize the human face first when deciphering abstract objects. Sure, seeing a female at HVNP in steam is intriguing, especially when considering the relationship between madam Pele and the park. However, it is no different then looking at clouds in the sky and looking a familiar shapes. I’ve seen apples, clowns, and the late image on Richard Nixon at the park. Steam is steam, it is the human imagination that adds context.
Wearing my “tinfoil” hat… I see a steam vent!
Thanks for taking this fun photo on my birthday!! I’ve seen the steam at the vents in the park, but I’ve only visited the ones on Highway 130 in Puna. I wish the State of the Feds would protect all these, and keep them open to the public – in their rustic state, jungle and all.
