Special to Hawaii 24/7

On Jan. 7, around 25 Lions Club members in West Hawaii and a couple of Leo Club members from Konawaena High School, gathered at Yano Hall to clean and pack more than 3,000 recycled prescription eyeglasses that were donated over the last two years by members of the community.

The donated glasses have been shipped to a regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center where they are being categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups to developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible.

Also, Lions Club of Kona along with the Hawaii Lions Clubs announce additional sites for its annual collections of used eyeglasses.

The next collection is 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28. Hawaii Lions statewide will be collecting used eyeglasses, sunglasses and hearing aides at neighboring Walmart Stores.

In addition, the Lions Club of Kona has set up additional sites in the West Hawaii area, which includes Choicemart in Captain Cook, KTA Keauhou, and KTA Kailua-Kona (Kailua Kona Lions club). Look for the familiar yellow Lions Club vests.

The Lions Club of Kona has 75 members and meets 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of every month at Teshimas Restaurant.
