Kona magazine writer wins honors

MEDIA RELEASE

Writers Digest recently awarded Jean Hartley Honorable Mention for her magazine article Les Journalistes.

Hartley has visited six African countries as a communications university professor. Les Journalistes describes her experience teaching writing in Togo, West Africa to bilingual youth who produced a four-page French-English newspaper.

October was a bountiful month for Hartley with the publication of Trading for Freedom, which ran in the nationally distributed magazine New Mobility. The article recounts a real experience at last year’s Kona Air Show.

Hartley describes the often-difficult transition from walking to using a wheelchair or scooter. The acceptance of an assistive device leaves behind unnecessary fatigue and gains the advantage of a new freedom of mobility.

Island Scene, an HMSA publication, will publish in January Hartley’s account of the romance between her electric scooter and her VW Beetle. The Perfect Marriage illustrates how technology, a good mechanic and ingenuity can expand freedom for those with limited mobility.

All articles can be obtained by contacting Hartley, CEO of Disabled Adventures Hawaii, at 808-896-8967.
