An autopsy had determined that a swimmer in distress died of natural causes.

South Hilo police responded to a report of a swimmer in distress at Richardson Ocean Park in Hilo at 5:24 p.m. Monday (December 26).

Responding officers determined that a 70-year-old Oahu woman had been knee-high in water about 20-30 yards out when she signaled her son for help.

During the week of December 19, 2011, through December 25, 2011, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. 

So far this year, there have been 1,422 DUI arrests compared with 1,495 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.9 percent.
