Winter Weather Advisory for Big Island summits until Tuesday evening (Dec 13)

A winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa until 6 p.m. Tuesday (Dec 13).

Snow and ice are forecast for summit areas above 11,000 feet. Driving will be hazardous due to periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain. An additional one inch of snowfall is expected today.

As of 5:18 a.m. Tuesday (Dec 13) the road to Mauna Kea summit is closed.

    We made it to the Summit on Sunday afternoon near sunset. We were the only ones there. It was so amazing to experience the Summit with snow falling without the heightened activity from tour groups etc.
