Kayaker rescued after flipping over, losing kayak in high winds

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 4:33 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Dec 7) for a kayaker in distress off Mahukona Beach Park on the Kohala Coast.

A 53 year-old man was kayaking 300-400 yards offshore, flipped over and lost his kayak in high winds and rough seas. The man was left only with his paddle as he treaded water in the open ocean for 30 minutes.

A paddle boarder was en route to the victim as firefighters arrived for the rescue. One firefighter swam out to the group offshore and provided assistance getting everyone back to the shoreline. Chopper Two was also on scene to monitor and possibly assist if needed.

The kayaker was brought to shore, checked by medics and refused further treatment.
