After Dark in the Park schedule for December

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park continues its tradition of sharing Hawaiian culture and After Dark in the Park programs with the community and visitors throughout December.

These programs are free, but park entrance fees apply.

* Coral Road: The Poetry of Garrett Hongo
7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6
Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium

Garrett Hongo’s long-awaited third collection of poems continues his literary explorations into the history of the impermanent homeland his immigrant ancestors found in Hawaii. Join the Volcano native and acclaimed poet for an intimate, exhilarating, and soul-searching evening. Copies of Coral Road will be available for sale, and the author will sign copies upon request. Part of Hawaii Volcanoes’ ongoing After Dark in the Park series. Free.

* The Kuahiwis Live in Concert.
7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13
Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium

Back by popular demand, the Kuahiwis bring their special blend of Hawaiian music, hula, and family deeply rooted in the volcanic soil of Hawaii. Join T.R. Ireland, Kiliona Young, and Grant Kaaua as they blend classic songs of their upbringing with modern rhythms and melodies of today. Copies of their award-winning CD, Hawaiian Music, will be available for sale. Part of Hawaii Volcanoes’ ongoing After Dark in the Park series. Free.

* Kalo
10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Dec. 14
Kilauea Visitor Center lanai

Join Sam and Edna Buldado as they share their knowledge and cultural uses of the kalo (taro) plant. Kalo is highly significant to Hawaiians, and is used for many things, including food, medicine, glue, and dyes. Part of Hawaii Volcanoes’ ongoing Ike Hana Noeau “Experience the Skillful Work” workshops. Free.

* John Keawe Live in Concert.
7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20 (auditorium opens at 6:30 p.m.)
Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium

Award-winning slack-key (kihoalu) guitarist, composer and recording artist, John Keawe, brings his warm, original style of music to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for the holidays. His wife Hope provides moving interpretations of his music with her graceful hula. This program is expected to be well attended, so come early for seating. John’s CDs and DVDs will be available for purchase. Part of Hawaii Volcanoes’ ongoing After Dark in the Park series. Free.

* Hula and Mele with Haunani’s Hula Expressions.
6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21 (auditorium opens at 6:15 p.m.)
Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium

Come sing along to your favorite Hawaiian melodies with this award-winning group of lively elders (kupuna) who sing and dance hula to the sweet sound of hapa haole music, and make all of their own costumes and lei. Part of Hawaii Volcanoes’ ongoing Nā Leo Manu “Heavenly Voices” series of cultural programs. Free.

* Ukulele with Oral Abihai
10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Dec. 28
Kilauea Visitor Center lanai

Join Oral Abihai as he shares his passion for making ‘ukulele from discarded or naturally fallen pieces of wood. Learning only several years ago in Lahaina from Kenny Potts, he has since made more than 50 ukulele. Part of Hawaii Volcanoes’ ongoing ‘Ike Hana Noeau “Experience the Skillful Work” workshops. Free.
