Hilo woman sentenced to 15 years for drug and property crimes

Prosecuting Attorney Charlene Iboshi announced today that on November 14, 2011, Dawn Delatorre-Ganon, a 29 year-old resident of Hilo, Hawaii, was sentenced to fifteen years in prison for various drug and property crimes.

On April 20, 2010, Defendant Delatorre-Ganon was sentenced by Judge Glenn Hara for various felony offenses in three separate criminal numbers. In Criminal Number 09-1-0233, Defendant was sentenced for Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Third Degree, Restriction on Electric Guns and Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle. In Criminal Number 09-1-0325, Defendant was sentenced for Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Third Degree. In Criminal Number 10-1-0080, Defendant was sentenced for Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle, Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Third Degree, Promoting a Harmful Drug in the Fourth Degree, and Prohibited Acts Related to Drug Paraphernalia. At the April 20, 2010 sentencing, the State had asked for a 15 year prison term, given the extensive and continuing nature of Defendant’s criminal activity. Defendant asked to be placed on probation, and claimed that it was not her fault that she was not able to get into drug treatment prior to sentencing. Judge Hara sentenced her to probation, with any remaining jail stayed on the condition that she comply with her probation conditions.

On February 2, 2011, Delatorre-Ganon was stopped by police who had a search warrant for her person. Police found her to be in possession of 3.99 grams of methamphetamine, packaged in multiple packets to facilitate distribution. On February 3, 2011, Defendant was charged with Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Third Degree, Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Second Degree, Attempted Methamphetamine Trafficking in the First Degree, and two counts of Prohibited Acts Related to Drug Paraphernalia. On October 21, 2011, Defendant pled to Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Second Degree in this case.

Between April 1, 2007 and May 31, 2009, Defendant received $24,078.94 in public assistance that she was not entitled to. She illegally received $2,778 in financial assistance, $9,346 in food stamps, $4,586.94 in medical assistance, $6,990 in housing assistance, and $378 in utility payments. This fraud was discovered by Department of Human Services investigators on August 31, 2009. On July 29, 2010, Defendant was charged with Theft in the First Degree. On October 21, 2011, Defendant pled to a reduced charge of Theft in the Second Degree in this case.

On November 14, 2011, Judge Greg Nakamura sentenced Defendant Delatorre-Ganon to fifteen years in prison for all of the above cases. Based upon her criminal history, Delatorre-Ganon must serve five years of this sentence before being eligible for parole.

    Wanna use drugs? Be my guest. Wanna use my tax dollars to buy those drugs? Now we gonna have problems.

      Listen… You don’t know what your talking about.. The media posts stories about events and put them together to make like it was bigger and badder than it actually was… I did not and have never spent government dollars or tax payers monies to buy drugs. Please get your facts straight before you post things like this.. If you want the real story please feel free to email me and I will give you the real facts.. leianikauwela@yahoo.com if not… dont judge me…

    The fact is, Dawn, that if you receive government assistance for housing, food, etc and, then, spend “other” money on drugs – in essence – your drug habits are being subsidized by tax dollars. Because, you are spending money on illicit substances that other people have to put towards rent, food, etc. I received government assistance, too. Instead, I got my butt into college and off of government assistance. Now, you misused your initial government assistance, continued your drug ways and – low and behold – are on the ‘ultimate’ government assistance – i.e., tax-payer bleed – incarceration.
