Irvine to be honored as ‘Physician of the Year’

On Nov. 7, the Hawaii County Medical Society and the East Hawaii Independent Physicians Association will be honoring Hilo’s long-time Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Robert Irvine as the 2011 Physician of the Year at the Hilo Medical Center Foundation’s 9th Annual Wine, Cheese, Chocolates and MORE! event.

“The Physician of the Year Award is a highlight of our Wine and Cheese fundraiser,” said Lori Rogers, Executive Director of the Hilo Medical Center Foundation. “Dr. Irvine is an exemplary selection and embodies the Hilo-style doctor who is and has been thoroughly dedicated to his patients and community.”

Hawaii County Medical Society’s chairwoman, Dr. Joanne Sarubbi, and East Hawaii Independent Physicians Association’s president, Dr. Richard Lee-Ching, will be presenting the award. However, due to family obligations on the mainland, Dr. Irvine will be accepting the award in a heartfelt video message.

In addition, the Foundation will honor retiring Oncologist Dr. Niranjan Rajdev and Emergency Department Physician Dr. Christopher King and recognizing East Hawaii’s new physicians.

They are: Dr. Peter Angelov, Dr. Gabriele Barthlen, Dr. Victor Bochkarev, Dr. Jay Boughanem, Dr. Sharada Chaitra, Dr. Danny Chaung, Dr. Andrew Choy, Dr. Kyle Coker, Dr. Douglas Do, Dr. Doede Donaugh, Dr. Lisa Kim, Dr. Torrey Lynch, Dr. Michael Pendleton, Dr. Joy Sakai, Dr. Anju Varanasi, Dr. Julie Chee, Dr. Stephen Seink, Dr. Ty de Silva, Dr. Deniz Tek, Dr. Quyen-Ann Tran, and Dr. Stephen Vernon.

Also featured are a magnificent array of pupus, chocolates, non-alcoholic beverages, chocolate fountains, and other delights. Chef Ernesto will be on hand to help with cheese and wine pairings.

Wine experts, Randy Nunokawa and Ryan Kadota will share their wisdom on the art of wine tasting. There will be live and silent auctions of selected pieces, including artwork, jewelry, hotel stays and other fantastic items.

The event is 4-7 p.m. at the Hilo Hawaiian’s beautiful Moku Ola Room and Lanai.

Tickets this year are limited and are available for $55 in advance at the Foundation office, Grapes and Kadota Liquors. If tickets are still available, they will be on sale for $60 at the door.
