The state’s official public school enrollment for the 2011-12 school year – with all 255 state Department of Education (DOE) schools and 31 charter schools – is 181,213, an increase of 1.7 percent compared to last year’s total of 178,189.

The DOE public schools enroll 172,104 (+2,117 from last year) students, about 95 percent of the total; while charter schools have 9,109 (+907), or 5 percent of the total.

The substantial enrollment increase for this school year may be attributed to the large number of births in 2006.

The birth increase correlates to the school year 2011-12 kindergarten enrollment which resulted in approximately 1000 more students as compared to previous years.

Public Schools

Enrollment in DOE schools has increased by 1.2 percent compared to last year’s count of 169,987.

The official DOE enrollment for the 2011-12 school year is 172,104 at 255 schools, including 155,070 (+2,178) in regular education and 17,034 (-61) in special education.

On Oahu, Leeward remained the largest administrative district with 39,537 students, followed by Central with 32,964, Honolulu with 31,251, and Windward with 14,706.

On the Neighbor Islands, Hawaii has 23,556 students, Maui has 20,779, and Kauai has 9,311.

In 2011-12, the five largest public schools by grade level are:

* High Schools (all grades 9-12) – Campbell (2,768), Farrington (2,483), Waipahu (2,463), Mililani (2,423), and Kapolei (2,054).

* Intermediate/Middle Schools – Mililani Middle (1,722, grades 6-8), Kapolei Middle (1,406, 6-8), Waipahu Intermediate (1,237, 7-8), Maui Waena Intermediate (1,084, 6-8), and Kalakaua Middle (1,005, 6-8),

* Elementary Schools – Holomua (1,375, grades K-6), August Ahrens (1,374, K-6), Kapolei (1,096, K-5) Ewa (1,084, K-6), and Kealakehe (1,046, K-5),

The five smallest public schools in the state include: Niihau (18, K-12), Kilohana (67, K-6), Waiahole (68, K-6), Maunaloa (68, K-6), and the Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind (70, K-12).

Charter Schools

Charter schools realized an 11.1 percent gain in enrollment to 9,109, over last year’s 8,202.

The five largest charter schools are: Hawaii Technology Academy (1,071, K-12), Kamaile Academy (910, K-10), Ka Waihona o ka Naauao (614, K-8), Kihei (509, K-12), Hawaii Academy of Arts & Sciences (498, K-12).

The five smallest charter schools are: Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha (32, K-12), Kula Aupuni Niihau a Kahelelani Aloha (46, K-12), Ke Ana Laahana (75, 7-12), Hakipuu Learning Center (78, 4-12), and Halau Ku Mana (80, 6-12).
