A group of over 40 people were at the Hawaii County Redistricting Commission meeting at the Keaau Community Center Saturday (Oct 15). The meeting was the last redistricting public hearing for East Hawaii as the final two public hearings Monday (Oct 17) and Thursday (Oct 20) will be in Kona. The commission’s job is to establish new boundaries for County Council districts based upon the recent 2010 Census population figures.
A concern by residents testifying at the hearing is to keep communities in Puna intact for County Council representation. Many testified in favor of a revised Plan 40 proposed by Big Island resident Margaret Wille and Friends of Puna’s Future.
The final two public hearings are:
- 6 p.m. Monday (Oct 17) at West Hawaii Civic Center, 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Hwy. Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
- 6 p.m. Thursday (Oct 20) at Yano Hall, 82-6156 Mamalahoa Hwy. Captain Cook, HI 96704
