Hilo airport runway repair funds top $10M

MEDIA RELEASE

The state Department of Transportation will receive $10,615,395 to refurbish a runway at Hilo International Airport, Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, Sen. Daniel K. Akaka and U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono have announced.

The money comes from a grant administered by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The money will be used for the construction phase of the runway rehabilitation underway on runway 3/21 at the Hilo International Airport.

The project is needed to maintain structural integrity of the pavement and to minimize foreign object debris.

“Safe and reliable air travel is critical to maintaining our all important visitor industry. If we want to maintain a healthy economy we must do all we can to ensure safe passage to and from Hilo for our residents and visitors,” Inouye said. “I am very pleased that this grant will help improve the Hilo International Airport and it is my hope that the federal government continues to put the people of Hawaii County to work by supporting our visitor industry through similar investments.”

“This federal grant to improve the runway at Hilo airport will help keep the Big Island open for business and tourism,” Akaka said. “Residents on all the islands depend on air travel to improve the economy and to make it possible to visit family and friends.”

“This federal funding for Hilo International Airport will upgrade the airport’s general aviation facilities as well as support local jobs and improve safety. These important investments in our infrastructure will also improve commuting to and doing business on Hawaii Island,” said Hirono, member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
